What are communication skills?

The word communication in general parlance implies the mechanism of sending vital information, ideas, words and views by one person to another whether in direct form or indirect form. Direct communication takes place when two or more persons are face to face. Indirect Communication involves written communication, i.e. communication through letters, messages, email etc. In fact we are always communicating with each other either through spoken words, written words or gestures. The modulation of voice is again an important feature of verbal communication. We shall be focusing more on formal communication skills here because that is the art and science that governs the corporate world.

Communication skills are the golden keys to success wherever you are. There is no fixed set of rules in this area it is an ever evolving area and people add more to it through their individual success story. Yet there are certain norms that one should endeavor to follow as a matter of general practice in order to start with. For instance, let us start with body language. A person who does not sit in a proper posture in a public meeting or interview may communicate the state of not being interested in the matter. See how people can get to know about you simply through your gestures and posture. This constitutes the area of body language interpretation under communication skills.

Similarly the way one writes an application, the selection of words, the way margins are left and the presence or absence of certain salutations and precise words as prevalent in the industry may tell the person reading a lot about your personality. This comes under the purview of written communication.

It is advisable to talk to the people around politely, with proper composure and to use words that they can easily understand. You do not need to bombard the environment with your vocabulary. Learn to speak the language of the common masses with an impressive accent and confidence. Verbal communication deals with this aspect of interaction with people. A person who is well versed in the art of verbal communication maintains a complete balance of gestures, posture, words, accent, modulation, speed of delivery of words, using the right words at the right time, giving proper examples to reach the listeners well and an overall impact through one’s dress-up also. See there are so many overt as well as covert aspects of communication skills. One learns most of the things here through mistakes. Even experts in this area learn through blunders. Remember the saying “Nobody is perfect” but improvement can be continuously endeavored.

When appearing for an interview it is better to sit erect with a slight tilt of a few degrees not exceeding an acute angle of fifteen degrees towards the interviewers and maintain a favorable eye contact to create a positive environment for communication. It is better that you do not fidget or take your hands again and again over your face during this period. There have been many instances where rejection has come to deserving candidates due to absence of proper and welcoming body language. Even after you get the job, you always have to be good at communication skills in your workplace because the human resource department does monitor every activity of the employees to give them performance grades. So, you see how justified I was when I told you that these are the golden keys to success.

The entire body of the subject communication skills as such is essential for professionals from all spheres of activity as well as those that are directly involved in any profession because it helps one to present oneself properly and helps to package one’s concepts in the right motley-garb. Communication skills and the accepted norms therein rescue us from fitting square pegs in round holes. Hence the guarantee of success comes along when one tries to communicate effectively using the established techniques of this art and science. Though there are many trendsetters in this area too and new concepts and norms come and replace the old ones as in the fashion industry.

My conviction is that any good product can be sold if the marketing strategy is accurate, at least from your own side. Isn’t it?
